What is Pilates?Pilates is a method of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasises the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility and to support efficient movement.Joseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1883, developed a technique to strengthen both body and mind after suffering ill health as a child, including asthma and rickets. He believed that by working both body and mind simultaneously he could cure illness and disease. He went on to develop his technique to rehabilitate soldiers during the war, and afterwards opened a studio in New York City where he started attracting well-known dance legends.This core method of exercise has been developed and modified, and its modern day approach, integrates anatomical and bio-mechanical thinking by Pilates teachers.Pilates can dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without bulk. It teaches body awareness, good posture and efficient movement patterns, and can greatly decrease muscle tension.

Pilates is beneficial for men and women, young and old, sedentary, athletic or in physical rehabilitation.
